About Central Victoria Swimming

SV Country Inter-district Competition

A brilliant results by our swimmers at the 2010 SV Country Inter-district competition! The squad of 40 of our best swimmers finished in third place overall building on the fine efforts of our youngsters in November. On the medal tally our squad won 5 Gold, 7 Silver, 10 Bronze and 14 "oh-so-close" 4th places.

The Relays provided great excitement with our 10/U Boys teams of Joshua Kennedy (Echuca), Jack Beale (Eaglehawk), Mitchell Almond (South Gisborne) and Oscar Reid (Echuca) producing a great, fighting "come from behind win" in the Freestyle Relay. Once again, with Eaglehawk's Harrison Howell swimming the Breaststroke the team gave us a "lead from the start, never going to lose it" win in the Medley relay. This team is without question the best in the whole of country Victoria. Our senior girls team of Katelin McLennan (Eaglehawk), Emma Lau (Eaglehawk), Emma Pendlebury (Gisborne Thunder) and anchored by Bendigo East's Rebecca Holmes capped of a great day with a fighting second place finish of the Open Freestyle relay.

Many thanks to Geoff Smalley (South Gisborne), Louise Mellington (Echuca) and Greg Smith (Eaglehawk) for managing the team on the day and all the parents who undertook time-keeping duties. There is no question that everyone left with a big smile on their face after a great day of excellent performances all round!

Central Victoria Swimming Championships

One hundred and seventy eight of Central Victoria’s best swimmers gathered at the Bendigo East Aquatic Centre on Sunday to contest the 2010 Central Victoria Swimming Championships. In warm and sunny conditions the young swimmers gave their all, striving for personal best times, podium finishes and the glory of their Club.

Eight new Championships records were set on the day with the lion’s share going to Eaglehawk’s Matthew Sherlock. Sherlock set 5 new records in the Mens 16/over and Open events, grabbing Mark Edebone’s long-standing 1980 Mens Open 100 Backstroke record in the process. Other records breakers were Bendigo East’s Callum Moloney in the Boys 9/U 50m Freestyle, Echuca’s Bradley Mellington in the Mens 16/over 100m Backstroke and Eaglehawk’s Open Womens Freestyle relay team of Emily Smith, Emma Lau, Amanda Gawthrop and Katelin McLennan. Mellington, a Backstroke specialist, also set a new District Record in the heats of the Mens 16yo 50m Backstroke event at last week-end’s State Sprint Championships. He finished in fourth place in the Final.

When all the swimming was done District vice-President Wally Stables presented trophies to the best-performed individuals and clubs. Matthew Sherlock picked up the award for the best-performed senior Male swimmer while Bendigo East’s Rebecca Holmes and Gisborne Thunder’s Emma Pendlebury shared the award for the Girls. Holmes won the junior swimmer’s award at last year’s Championships. This year the best junior swimmers on the day were Bendigo East’s Callum King and Gisborne Thunder’s Samantha Simpkins.

Each year at the Championships the club’s strive to win the coveted Allan Monaghan Shield for the highest Girls aggregate, the Charles R. Turner Memorial Shield for the highest Boys aggregate and the Frank Burgess Trophy for the highest combined Boys and Girls aggregate. On Sunday Eaglehawk “scooped the pool” winning all three trophies! “What a sensational performance by the whole club. Every swimmer from our youngest to our oldest contributed to this fantastic result”, declared an excited Head Coach James Sherlock.

Next week-end the swimmers and coaches will unite as a team to compete against the best country Victoria has to offer at Swimming Victoria’s Country Inter-district competition to be held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The forty-strong team will be hoping to emulate the feat of the District’s younger swimmers who finished in second-place overall at November’s 7-10 Encouragement Meet.

Swim Legend Visits Central Victoria

About forty of Central Victoria’s up and coming young swimming stars were treated to a very special afternoon last Sunday when they were visited by one of Australia’s greatest swimming champions of recent years, Michael Klim OAM.

Klim, along with Swimming Victoria Target 2012 coach Andreas Falkenau of the Rochester Swimming Club, conducted a swimming clinic in the Eaglehawk Swimming Club’s home pool at the Peter Krenz Leisure Centre. The clinic was part of Swimming Victoria’s Go Club Program to help develop young swimmers in regional Victoria.

For more than two hours the swimmer’s benefited from Klim’s years of experience swimming at the highest levels of the sport as he explained and demonstrated the finer points Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly as well as race starts, turns and finishes.

After the session in the pool the swimmers, coaches and parents gathered in the Eaglehawk Swimming Club’s rooms to hear Klim offer advice on topics such as nutrition for young swimmers, getting the most out of training sessions and how to best prepare for success in competitions. He also answered a range of questions about swimming in general and related of some of the highlights of his long and distinguished career, much to the delight of the audience.

Klim’s international career started at the 1994 Commonwealth Games while he was still a secondary school student in Melbourne. He went on to swim at three Olympic Games and four World Championships where he won 9 Gold medals, 5 Silver medals and 3 Bronze medals setting 3 World Records and 5 Australian records along the way. His long career concluded at the 2007 World Championships where, as part of Australia’s winning 4 x 100m Medley Relay team, he finished as a World Champion.

“To have such a highly decorated elite athlete as Michael give up his time to help the District’s young swimmers develop is wonderful for the sport in our region”, said District President, Hayden Stewart, as he thanked Klim for his support. Mr. Stewart also thanked Swimming Victoria’s Sport Development Officer, Mark Pettifer with whom he had worked to secure the services of Klim.

After the formalities, Klim stayed to chat with the excited swimmers while he happily signed autographs and posed for photographs.

VALE - Reg Neely
It is with sadness that I inform you all of the passing of Reg Neely on the 20th October 2009 after a long illness. Reg is husband of Chris, father of Debbie Morris and grandfather of Dylan Morris. Reg has been an official in our District for many years. He has represented our District at Country Short Course and Long Course Championships over the years.

Reg's family have been strong supporters of the Rochester Swimming Club and District 15. He was last seen by many of us on pool deck at the Country Short Course Championships held in Wangaratta cheering on his daughter and grandson.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chris, Debbie, Dylan and family.

New Victorian Long Course and Victorian Country Long Course qualifying times have been set by Swimming Victoria. The CVS Performance database contains the new QT's.
